True, but ultimately unimportant. Irving lived a long, fulfilling life and had one of the most, if not THE most, powerful careers as a historian in our time. Each generation carries with them a list of a dozen or so top influential fiction authors whose names come to define their respective era of literature. The same cannot be said of historians. While many attempt to do so, in reality, only a few men get "to write history" as we know it & be regarded as the high authority carrying the final word on historical matters.
In a era defined by ideological censorship in academia, David Irving stood out as a man who would compell his way into the heights of influence not only by the credibility of his work, but by his sheer will & bravery to defend it. He became a man academia could not force into irrelevance. His career has changed the historiography of WWII forever. He stood for the truth against institutions of deceit. In his passing, let us honor his career and give thanks to God for the blessing of his life's work. The volumes he published will remain a permanent testament not only of the events of the 20th century, but of life of the man who dared to write them.
