Dr. G. Power (gpowerf@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 03:06:12 JST Dr. G. Power @nixCraft One of my go-to guys for PC hardware knowledge runs Windows exclusively. He owns a PC building business in the Philippines, too... but it puzzles me too, Windows is such a painful experience and I avoid it at all costs.

SabiLewSounds (sabilewsounds@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 03:07:01 JST SabiLewSounds @nixCraft ehhh I love Linux but also don't think I could learn to use it easily even if I could build my own PC
That being said it's still a goal of mine
It's been at least a decade since I was on Linux and others set things up for me 😅

nixCraft 🐧 (nixcraft@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 03:08:58 JST nixCraft 🐧 It all comes down to the availability of apps. The absence of popular apps such as Adobe and some AAA games is the main reason why some people hesitate to switch to alternative operating systems. However, those who are capable of assembling their own PCs are usually tech-savvy enough to adapt and use alternative operating systems, provided that their necessary apps and games are available.

Charlie (boscozebra@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 03:13:47 JST Charlie @nixCraft the only games I’ve had not work on Linux are ark online, kernel wpace program 2, space station 13, and RuneScape. I’m not sure I’ve had a AAA give me trouble recently. Currently enjoying BG3, Palworld, and Cities Skylines 2.

Stephen McNamara (noflcl@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 03:14:20 JST Stephen McNamara @nixCraft Almost exclusive Linux user on desktop, lab servers, and cloud.
Literally built a "console" this long weekend and struggled for two days 4 distros to get Steam to launch 2 specific games. I just wanted a set and forget console, boot to steam, I don't need to be home for the family to play a game. Failed ❌Back to Win 10 Pro_x64, auto login, added Steam as the desktop Shell. 95% everything plays on Linux. I have so much tech to maintain daily my game console doesn't need to be one.

Antti Joutsi (jarizleifr@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 03:39:49 JST Antti Joutsi @nixCraft Have been gaming on Linux for almost two years now and not once have I had a game simply not run on Proton/Wine.
Backups are easier, as you can just backup your entire Wine prefix, since it's self-contained. All your Windows registry, files and save games are there and you can run it on any Linux machine.
Also, some older Windows games run perfectly on Wine, but not on modern Windows. So much for Microsoft and their touted "legacy compatibility"...

hdante (hdante@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 03:42:01 JST hdante @nixCraft given personal empirical evidence, I don't believe the problem is availability of apps, it's because most people are unwilling to leave their comfort zone and switch to a new technology. I don't have hard statistical data to back this up, though.

shaythompson (shaythompson@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 03:42:52 JST shaythompson @nixCraft Can != wants to
Has the knowledge != Has the time/energyMy gaming PC is just for gaming. I'd much rather spend my free time playing those games rather than fight with outdated Linux drivers and browsing Proton workarounds. Or heck, I'd spend that time, like, reading a book or cooking a new meal. I have a life beyond my computer setup.

matty_r (matty_r@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 05:30:46 JST matty_r @nixCraft that's a bad take. Building a computer is hardware. Plus its more or less just more expensive Lego these days. The barrier to entry isn't that high.

Mikael Lassi (soche@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 06:10:50 JST Mikael Lassi @nixCraft "provided that their necessary apps and games are available."
This is the key phrase. I have tried several times to move over to Linux on my daily driver, but keeps running into stumbling blocks, with audio routing, and getting the games I enjoy to work, and some work related apps working.

Tadeo D'Oria 🇦🇷 💚🧡 (rekkert@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 07:40:20 JST Tadeo D'Oria 🇦🇷 💚🧡 @nixCraft As a Linux user I find this sort of mentality reductive and unhelpful.
Linux still has A LOT of valid issues even for technically minded folks that part of the comunity is happy to ignore or blame on someone else rather than challenging the gatekeepy status quo of the community. -
TheBen (theben@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 08:19:52 JST TheBen @nixCraft it is getting close but I can't quite do a full switch due to a few reasons: certain drivers are missing (canon camera stuff for me) others are there but not in full (the AMD adrenaline software) and gaming is not quite there (anti cheat problems and occasional games just don't work) it is much closer to being ready than when I first tried back in the mid 2000s (it was hell to get one game running through wine) but it needs a little more cooking on a few things before I can switch.

sirwobin (sirwobin@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 20-Feb-2024 16:28:07 JST sirwobin @nixCraft I run Linux and tried to run my favourite game (Civ 6) but it’s so buggy that it’s literally unplayable. :-( Would if I could. Still have Linux but stopped gaming because it’s not possible.
