     I saw a man once unironically utilize "[air] parentheses" (for effect). It was one of the most {magical, amazing, interesting} moments in the talk and it solidified this premise in my brain. Your talk is a close second.

     Reminds me of a Robbie Burns quote (allegedly) about, "There goes a bow legged man." to which Burns replied saying, "No there goes a man with his balls in parentheses."

     These are square brackets.
     We use the word square to differentiate them from "round" brackets. Which in British English look like this: ( )

     What matters most is the meaning, not the name. Especially if working internationally. So where the American English name causes ambiguity, surely the easiest thing is to clarify your meaning, rather than demand everyone bow to your naming convention, which already leads to confusion?
