What'd be really neat and handy for me is a KVM system that works more like a VM.
Like, you have a USB device that captures video and also has a USB plug for keyboard mouse. The connected machine appears as a window on the main PC.
So basically something like RDP/VNC, but without networking, just low-latency video capture

@kencrandall Neat! How is it on latency? Everything I've used that's remotely like this has been a laggy mess, like "you can watch the mouse trail behind your movements" kind of bad

basically I've got a main windows machine and I often need to run linux things from it: I have a regular KVM but that makes splitting work between windows/linux a pain, since I can't copy/paste across the machines and I have to do a full screen switch.
I was using linux VMs but they've become increasingly unstable for no reason I can determine, and it really eats into the RAM of the main PC

I've used RDP/VNC into a remote PC before, but then I run into the problem of latency, and even when both machines are on the same gigabit switch it's still painful to use. It feels like I'm using windows 95 again

@mary I have (I think my roommate has actually deployed one in our garage) but the low-latency is really key for me, and "KVM over IP" and "raspberry pi" both sound like a latency nightmare in my experience

I've already got an HDMI capture device on my main PC (for VHS tapes). I guess I could figure out a tricky way to make a mouse that works...
I've already built a remote controlled mouse/keyboard but it's designed for only one computer. Maybe I just build it to control a second computer, over a USB male-to-male cable
