The First Crusade crosses the Bosphorus in 1097, having vowed to the Byzantine Emperor that they would fight side-by-side, reclaiming the lost Holy Land for Rome in the name of God. Soon after landing the combined Latin-Byzantine army sieged Nicaea and won a major battle at Dorylaeum, restoring western Anatolia to Eastern Rome.

The council of Clermont in 1095. The Byzantine Emperor Alexios Komnenos has sent the Pope a desperate plea. The Turks have overrun Anatolia and the Holy city of Constantinople is in great danger of falling. The pope Urban II has called all of Christendom to set aside their differences, to face this common threat to their civilization, and reclaim the Holy Lands in the name of God.
