@rami @emilymbender @danmcquillan It is definitely possible to design AIs in an ethical manner, but you'd need to approach the task in a very different way than OpenAI is doing!
OpenAI's whole technique is to throw as much data as they can into the neuralnet & see what comes out. Any attempt to curate that data would necessarily contradict their techniques for getting the results they are.
On the otherhand there's neuralnet architectures like NeRFs which promises to be enabling!

I really appreciated reading the article. Now I understand why you have a problem with “AI” such as chatGPT.
The question I have is this: If training data was acquired from higher quality sources and labeled in an ethical manner, could this tech ever be useful?

@micah @emilymbender @danmcquillan Yeah, unfortunately I *don't* have any expectations of government stepping in re: generative AI any time soon (they have their hands full just trying to get Apple to support mobile sideloading for goodness sake!)…despite the fact it's going to **decimate** an already very shaky and challenging market for original creative content online.

@jaredwhite @emilymbender @danmcquillan Right, it’s useful to consider the fact that we have to struggle to convince lawmakers to enact minimal regulations on devices whose main purpose is to commit mass murder.
With this in mind what sort of chances do those with ethics in mind have against Big SALAMI ?

@micah @emilymbender @danmcquillan Maybe because we see the societal harms on the level of assult riffles and hard drugs. Are there ever "good" use cases for these technologies? Perhaps. Yet even so, unregulated usage is wildly disastrous and its promoters inherently unethical.

@emilymbender @danmcquillan I haven’t read it but I’m disturbed by the headline. The fact that we’re already dividing one another into hard ideological camps is going to be very unuseful in the future.
People who do see the harms and the extractivism are not doing themselves a favor by giving it 0 out of 10 stars in all 22 categories, when other people are going to find this technology useful.
