@All_bonesJones I saw. Probably one of the most pathetic gen yet. Damn thing was barely available for most of its life and then there were barely any exclusives worth getting the damn thing for
Let's see the Xbox podcast tomorrow for more bad news lol
@coolboymew@All_bonesJones Oof and I remember the scalping craze during the pandemic. My nephew wanted one bad and my brother shelled out over a grand to a scalper to get one and I was like wtf why!? Now you can find them for retail price all day every day, and the most screwed thing is all he does is play fortnite and call of duty on it which he could've done on a pc he already had.
I contemplated getting a series console until I found out the nvme drives are keyed and you can't upgrade them like you could with the sata drives on the xbox one. Once I discovered that I was like yeah no I'm not supporting anti-consumer practices.
@zemichi@coolboymew The PS5 is suffering from the same problem OS/2 and some of the Android competitors with Android app support did.
"If more people have the PS4, let's target the PS4, it does everything we want to anyway for this game".
There's new console games coming out on the PS4 that will play fine on the PS5 and devs don't care because people will buy the PS5 and still use it as a PS4.
@Pawlicker@zemichi that's pretty spectacular because Switch 2 could be more on par with a PS5
It's ultimately raising the question of "why does that gen exists?" when a lot of devs are just fine with the previous power. The power increase is seriously starting to see a diminishing result. mid-tier devs are catching up while AAA games are getting uglier
@Pawlicker@zemichi@coolboymew PS2 and PS3 didn't suffer the same problem despite offering backwards compatibility too. It's just the graphics and other advancements plateau'd since the last gen.
@coolboymew@zemichi The other thing about the PS5/Series and why normies don't care about the "no games" jokes, is that one of the things the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro did was if you run a game that is not specifically "optimized" or marked as an enhanced game, you won't get 4k native resolutions but you'll get a higher framerate as the game has more CPU/GPU power.
So games that had framerate issues on the One and PS4 ran better on the Xbox One X and PS4 Pro. The same applies to an even more dramatic extent on the Xbox Series X/S and PS5. It's crazy playing BF4 on a One X and seeing it run fast without the drops it was known for on the One, and that's not even a Series S/X.
Joe Normie treats it as "wow I can run Fortnite faster than on the PS4".
The PS1/2/3 did not share the same architecture, or OS setup. The PS4, Pro, and 5 share the same OS and software architecture. The Pro and 5 run PS4 games better than on a PS4. The same goes with the Xbox One/X/Series S/X. You can write a game for the Xbox One and the Series S/X/One X will run it faster with fewer framerate drops.
@coolboymew@zemichi@mint It's also a business strategy shift. In 2020, Phil Spencer infamously stated that he hated generation exclusives, only to backpedal this a few months later. Halo Infinite was still on the One though you needed a One X to run it at a decent framerate. A lot of devs will make cross gen games historically and when the only difference is "oh the Series X has a faster GPU and CPU", it's easy to see why they'd hold out so long.
In particular the Series S pissed off developers because Microsoft was insistent that developers have feature parity between both (while Sony didn't). This infamously bit Microsoft when Baldur's Gate 3 launched on even the Mac first before the Xbox, leading MS to change their strategy with that.
@coolboymew@Pawlicker@zemichi Graphics really haven't changed in 10 years but hardware power has gone up considerably. They could be putting cool stuff running in the background ala Dwarf Fortress (every dwarf having simulated fingers and toes and a personality etc) but no it's all uncompressed audio and ugly UI
@monsterislandcolonizer@Pawlicker@zemichi Pretty much as said, AAA is floundering really fucking hard and it's getting pathetic. Most of the biggest timeless games has a specific art style rather than push realism hard, which also ages extremely poorly
But other than that, power is good for smaller devs with engine, but yeah, we're reaching a big point where the power is just... good enough
Talking about doing crazy shit with that power they aren't doing. I always thought that it would be cool as fuck to have a game with OOT like graphics (and optimisation) but the world would be alive as fuck with loads of stuff going on at the same time, without loading zone and etc. But nobody is doing cool shit like this. This is what I want to see "AAA" effort attempt to do but instead we get the same shit you've been playing in the last 15 years
@coolboymew@zemichi@monsterislandcolonizer nobody is even doing ps2/360 style less realistic or making "cgi movie style" graphics because AAA devs cannot think like that.
