   Question for anyone who has an instance of their own or has had experience making one: What would you say is the "hardest part"?

   I was thinking making sure emails are sent and don't just go straight into spam is probably one of them. Also, do I need an S3 bucket to handle media etc or is there a way I can host it all locally?

   I'm thinking of hosting my own instance at some point in the future and I wondered how I go about setting an environment up. (I feel like I should say this if it's not already obvious- I would be doing it entirely from scratch with no previous work in messing with any self hosted instance of anything at all) - do I have a system running Proxmox or something similar and then have the instance in that?

   It's all quite new to me admittedly, and aiming to do some of this myself is probably something I hope to work towards...

     anonymous VPS services that take crypto exist, but are slightly more expensive.
     
     Not sure on the registrar front. might as well use a free domain extension or something that you can put fake info into..
     
     
     as for crowdsec, its shit and blocks legit VPN users so I don't care for it

     Porkbun did fit the bill before, at least until they shoehorned ID confirmation when trying to fill account with crypto. My old account doesn't have the restriction yet, but the new one I tried making does. I'd bake a fake passport scan of some irrelevant eastern euro country and that would probably pass their filters, but I was too lazy for that.

     @FUCKINGWHOCARESDUDE i'm thinking and I might just use a vps after all - my only hang up about it is because I'm in a country that is leaning towards being authoritarian (the UK) I was worried that any VPS provider I have would give in if the authorities wanted to get my information from them.
     
     I won't be hosting anything morally questionable on the instance at all, but who knows, in a country like this, saying you disagree with how the prime minister does things may be illegal soon or some shit idk. Scary

     @t My only additional recommendation to those already mentioned would be to use something like CrowdSec on your machine (be it local or VPS). It is similar to Fail2Ban, but also blocks IPs that have been added to a crowdsourced list, so it is more proactive.

     Pleromer has a test email command for that, generally it shouldn't be a problem as long as your mailserver is configured with DKIM/DMARC/all the other bullshit, otherwise just add a warning not to use gmail/outlook for regs on about page.
     Protip: if you're lazy, you don't need a while separate mailserver for registration confirmations, you could use cock.li/lolcow.email/whatever with SMTP login support.

     No, unless you're aiming for thousands of users. At worst your media would take maybe 10% of storage space compared to DB, at least as long as you're not doing the sjw and making hundreds of image spambots.

     If you feel like it. Mine lives in a basic LXC container that can only communicate with host and postgres database in the next container.

     It's just a proxy and not a real registrar, plus the owner is very anti-chud so you could kiss goodbye to your domain if some tranny complains about it.
