Aw I missed this convo before, but it would have been interesting. I liked how kudelia came to nothing - she was an influencer playing politics, only really useful as a figurehead....as long as the puppeteers behind the scenes want her to be.
That riot that she saw, all that unrest was fomented and glo-nigged from the start. Season 2 saw that she was a politician without much use, only really good for drumming up investments in a bonanza on martian slave labor now that those kids are shaking up the status quo.
McGillis likewise had these grand plans, pretentions of honor, meritocracy, and nobility that died the instant they met the real world - the comfortable legions in the fleet don't care about honor so much as getting their next meal. They'll side with the bad guys if it looks like you're rocking the boat in a way that will hurt them.
I didn't LOVE how iron blooded orphans went in season 2, but it was at least a kind of historical accuracy where people had high hopes and a bag full of luck....that ran out before they filled their bag o' experience
