Is it lame to have nostalgia for old commercials?
My friend likes to watch compilations of old commercials from the 80's-2000's and I can kinda understand the fond memories or the more memorable commercials but I can't imagine enjoying them enough to watch a bunch of em.
Where commercials actually better back in the day or are all advertising bad?

On top of the now knowledge I have about the whole thing, doesn't help -

Like it's easy to remember that damn singing power outlet but not what they're supposed to be advertising. Older commercials feel like they had more personality, though that might be selective memory. -
Moon (moon@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 03-Feb-2024 05:28:53 JST Moon @coolboymew @Weeble I think it is worse but I'm not 100% on that. the reason I think it's worse is simply that advertising got better at manipulation and more desperate. cool_boy_mew likes this. -

Unlike TV it's easier to block ads online and they have to be shorter on average, so it means they have to try harder to garner attention.
And yes ppl are more antagonist towards ads recently and that plays into that.
My friend has a theory that Progressive ruined an entire generation of commercials cuz they were the first to start making these dumb skit commercials that had almsot nothing to do with what they were selling.cool_boy_mew likes this. -

I like doing the same (there's youtube channels of just that). It's not so much that the commercials are good, though some are, but that it's opening a portal into a different era. Not the pop culture snippets that achieved mythological success that we still remember to this day that get referenced over and over in shows like Stranger Things but the much more mundane aspects of the culture of that era.cool_boy_mew likes this. -
