   Katara was always kind of a preachy brown bitch crying about "muh sexism," but the writers were at least self-aware enough to balance that with more endearing traits to make her tolerable. Netflix is advertising the fact they're gutting the smart character writing that made the show work to begin with. Characters being human and relatable is now implicitly right-wing, because real human emotions as opposed to artificial tropes designed to break stereotypes are too close to badthink.

They might Buck Break Sokka, though Azula always had strong Psycho Lesbian tendencies that might be made explicit, though that trope might also be too politically incorrect for Current Year.

     @ArdainianRight ATLA is a very liberal show, the plot is yet another liberal fantasy of WW2, it’s very brown, even for its time it was extremely feminist, and the whole moral conflict of the final arc is a thinly veiled metaphor for the death penalty debate which was raging at the time (naturally they endorse the Democrat anti death penalty position). the reason that it’s good is simply when it was made, liberal writers in America back then were still interested in creating fun worlds, stories, and characters, they were at least as interested in Asian cultures and martial arts as they were the hot issues of the Democratic Party. Oh and faggots weren’t required to be in every kids show, that’s the other big difference.
     
     that era is just gone, full stop. It was really at the very tale end of it too because even korra, which feels like a lifetime ago at this point, had already moved on from ATLA’s feminism of “look, the girls are just as tough and strong as the boys!” To “actually girls are tougher and stronger and better in every way” and liberals have gotten DRAMATICALLY more bitter and vindictive in the decade since korra. It’s a lot like Star Trek, the lighthearted fun days are never coming back, it’s all resentment from here on.

     @jimmybuffettfanaccount Yeah, ATLA is the last really good Western cartoon I can remember, and even then the issues that would soon take over the industry were creeping in. The reason stuff like that can't be made today is not at all because of the "chuds," but because of gradual societal degradation, which is more accelerated societal degradation in many fields.

     @jimmybuffettfanaccount @ArdainianRight I never got into Avatar, so my go-to example is Justice League - it's definitely left-liberal, anti-Bush (of course, that's not necessarily a bad thing!), and made sure the Green Lantern picked for the team was the more obscure John Stewart (who was black) rather than Hal Jordan, easily the most notable and iconic GL. There's even an interracial romance involving him and Hawkgirl that's relatively prominent.
     
     And yet, not only is the show itself genuinely good, but it has plenty of wholesome elements like fanservice, and male and female beauty ideals being consistently promoted (all the female heroes are slim, curvy and boobalicious hotties - all the male heroes are broad-shouldered, square-jawed Chads). There's even positive depictions of religion, with Amanda Waller's redemption arc being partly driven by her finding Jesus.

     Yes but also Sokka outperformed the girls within a day of training in their style lmao (I don't think this is the writers secretly being based I just think it's an ironic aspect to how they wrote the episode). Come to think of it, it's kinda like the battle-of-the-sexes version of "white man learns the natives' ways and becomes better than them at their own ways in order to defend them" plot. Kinda reminds me of something else called Avatar :thinkspin:

     @sapphire @ArdainianRight when I talk about feminism in atla what sticks out most to me is the main party dynamic that’s got the girl in the group being the most emotionally mature and level headed (this is of course an egregious fantasy, and anyone who remembers high school and has ever been in a group project with a teenage girl before knows) that and toph, they literally do the bit within the show of “oh I bet you thought the worlds best earth bender would be a big strong man but it’s ACTUALLY a little girl with disabilities! don’t you feel stupid for having preconceived notions of gender and biology.”
     
     again, I like both of these characters fine they’re fun and funny, but just like when kids shows make the black characters the smart inventor types they’re clearly doing stuff like this for propagandandistic reasons.

The show very frequently criticizes her for being TOO “level headed” as she unlearns her need to be the “voice of reason” (who, by the way, is almost always Sokka if you pay attention)

     Also I’m going to pull an extra topic: the death penalty argument was very much aang’s internal struggle and not nearly so much political commentary. I’d get it if it came out of nowhere or if there was a debate about it but it was really just Aang (who, if you remember, is the last of a group of people who rejected all killing. We were shown aang squashing a bug as a HUGE display of his emotional distress and rage) vs LITERALLY EVERYONE ELSE. I think Katara was the closest to compromise when she said it’s aangs fight and he’s gonna have to decide how to do it.
