If the free market worked to benefit consumers and if companies always acted in the best interests of the consumer and if corporations weren't positively reenforced to consistent malevolent, anti-social behavior then we wouldn't need government regulations to force market entities to stop doing shitty things and good things wouldn't solely exist within the places where these regulations existed.

Why do you think you only have only one (sometimes two) choices of isp's?
If you guessed becuase the government gave grants and made it hard for more than one isp to lay down lines you would be correct. The government makes regulations for the company's not the other way around. -

Basically they wanted to set up an ISP in the city that was funded by taxes or something like that. I remember the feds (or state, can’t remember off the top of my head) literally prevented them from doing that, because everyone else including the city counsel was on board.
I remember wondering why at the time. I don’t wonder anymore.
Also a good chunk of the reason for this is spying.
