@arstechnica My suspicion is that a lot will indeed fall under "parody" exceptions to copyright laws, but they really really pushed the limits of what they could get away with. I'd assume as much time and money as they've invested into this they investigated thoroughly first, but... at the same time the whole thing just feels so much like they simply don't care or something. I really don't know. It's going to be very interesting to see how this turns out.
@arstechnica I've played Gen 1 and 2, had cards, watched the show, and played the latest gens of Pokemon as well. I've also played PalWorld. Imo, PalWorld is meaningfully distinct from Pokemon in every other way besides catching monsters in balls and using them to fight/work, which is kind of a silly thing to say that Pokemon owns. I suspect Nintendo getting their lunch eaten, first by Stardew Valley over Harvest Moon, now by PalWorld over Pokemon, lies at the heart of the motivation here.
