So a project I've had on the list for a long time has found 2 recent reasons to increase the priority. I am going to use an old desktop PSU to build a benchtop power supply. I will build the case out of cherry. Of the half a dozen or so I have lying around in my office I think I've landed on an Antec which has a 17A 12V rail that would be sufficient for my immediate needs at least.
My electronics components bins were destroyed by the cat so I have to search a bit to find my posts, switches, and meters for the front, but I can get started on the carcass in the meantime.

@thatguyoverthere Can't wait to see your cherry case! I've long wanted to build a nice jointed wood and glass PC case out of fancy wood, but I've yet to get around to it. Are you simply building a PSU enclosure for misc. use and non-computer components?
-
@BowsacNoodle yeah this is for a general purpose power supply that I can use to power electronics circuits. It would also be handy with the electrolysis tank and most recently the diesel heater.
I have a kit that I already soldered up well over a year ago at this point that gives me fused terminal blocks for 12, 5, and 3.3v outputs, but I also have a variable controller that can be set to a fairly wide range of voltages.
-
@thatguyoverthere I briefly looked into doing this and wasn't sure if the newer "smart" power supplies would be suitable for it. I don't know how those work, but I assumed it was amperage load based internal switching or something.
-
@BowsacNoodle I don't have any "smart" psus but there is a needed resistance which is handled by the circuit board. I don't know about newer supplies

@BowsacNoodle @thatguyoverthere i don't fuck with electricity.

@givenup @BowsacNoodle live a little
-
@givenup @thatguyoverthere it's not nearly as scary as you'd think. Understandable though.
-
@givenup @BowsacNoodle you spelled fun wrong
-
@thatguyoverthere @BowsacNoodle ironic.
-
@BowsacNoodle @thatguyoverthere i ain't really read this thread tbh, so i am a bit of a dick who barges in.
-
@BowsacNoodle @thatguyoverthere naw seriously dude, i don't trust it, i wouldn't wire nothing without my stepdad ever.
-
@givenup @thatguyoverthere Its not quite as simple as en engine for diagnostics, but it isn't terrible either.
-
@BowsacNoodle @givenup @thatguyoverthere I don't work with electricity and I'm literally the bravest and most fearless person I know.

@givenup @BowsacNoodle @thatguyoverthere
We had a neighbor that was working on his electricity under the flooring so he had to go under the house. His family was having lunch while he was working and when after some hours they noticed he hadn't stopped by and they found him stuck to a wire.
That shit still spooks me to this day man, imagine dying right under your folks going about their day.

@kf01 @BowsacNoodle @givenup that's what circuit breakers are for
-
@kf01 @BowsacNoodle @thatguyoverthere even i know to go back to the box in the back and flip them breakers if i really gotta fuck with it.
-
@kf01 @givenup @thatguyoverthere It's only magic until you understand it. Then it's danger and overconfidence will kill you.
-
@BowsacNoodle @kf01 @thatguyoverthere i am generally a bit more risk averse than the average guy, tbh.
-
@givenup @kf01 @thatguyoverthere Nothing wrong with that. I have almost no fear of heights but I was very nervous about electric stuff for a long time. Batteries scare me more since you can get huge amps and enough volts to harm yourself with car batteries or Lithium ion stacks. At least household AC has enough voltage to sting and kick you off unlike the DC that can lock you in, unless I'm mistaken.
-
@BowsacNoodle @givenup @kf01 @thatguyoverthere I wanna say 120 is enough to make your hand keep qripping
It's high voltage that kills.
