I haven’t done a #dailyelfdose surrounding a specific elf in a while, and it’s been a good year to do so. Today’s post is dedicated to the famous elf mage of the Hero Party, Frieren of Sousou no Frieren!
I haven’t watched the anime that gave people the most exposure to the subdued elf, I went the manga route as recommended by a friend. I’m caught up now, and it’s been funny seeing the flurry of accusations leveled towards Frieren as being “flavor of the month”, especially considering the timelessness that is at the core of the story. Frieren had the uniquely elven problem of being too farsighted, a natural effect of a long lifespan; but this elf chooses to be more present, learning after the passing of her old party to treasure human life. Every issue begins with her keeping track of the years, remembering her friends and their adventures. It’s an admirable story of finding peace in the present moment, the appreciation of simplicity, and the spirit of adventure, and for that I consider Frieren an elf of the upper eschelons.
