It was originally built from Unix (this is my understanding), uses an operating system (GNU?) which is based on Unix. It’s a derivative of Unix, no matter how far removed.
Just like how every programming language is ultimately assembly even if they are several abstractions away from it, since they all compile to assembly (or binary) in the end.
