A lifetime of amateur psychology lead me to conclude that "normal, well-balanced people" have been taught from infancy to trust "authority" to know more than they do, and so tend to comply more often than not. Only those, like me, who have been betrayed enough to have developed a critical eye, become 'conspiracy theorists" and are willing to distrust and research. That probably makes society and civilization work much more smoothly -- .until malicious betrayal arrives.

That's my take on it.So many well meaning people complied, and many died.
