   @freemo@qoto.org While watching things with subtitles instead of voice overs is good, I think people overestimate the effectiveness.
   
   Dutch people are good at English and nearly everyone can speak fluently, but I don't think anyone can become fluent in a language by just watching TV. We also interact a lot with English media and English people in general.
   
   For example I'm pretty sure I've watched more Japanese media with subtitles in my life than I've watched English media, yet I speak fluent English but I can only say basic sentences in Japanese.

     I'm such a nerd.. A dutch friend of mine remarked "One reason the Dutch are so good at english is when you go to the movies we dont have voice overs, we use closed captioning instead"...

     I replied "no you don't", and he protested before i pointed out it is literally impossible for a movie theater to show closed captioning because by definition closed captioning implies the viewer has the control to turn it off and on, which you cant do at a theater. He was referring to open captioning :)
