is there actually any good ways to do it online these days? I feel like i've tried everything which isnt actively malicious at this point (for sheepishpatio ofc)
what do people here prefer as far as ads go?
(yes im sure everyone here uses adblock)
I like banner ads the most, especially self serve ones-
Machismo (zerglingman@freespeechextremist.com)'s status on Monday, 15-Jan-2024 02:44:26 JST Machismo @Lumeinshin I don't use adblock, I just don't support loading ads in the first place. :^)
lynx go brrrrr
I honestly think advertising, as a concept, is a mistake. Yellow pages were fine.
But then I am trying to run a game store, and it is not going anywhere because basically no advertising. I focus on doing paper stuff, which works since it's specifically for people in the area. For online stuff... Good luck?

I did debate making some stickers and whacking them around my country lol but idk how illegal that is :cirno_shrug:
I think self-serve stuff can be nice, since it goes directly/almost straight to the site admins and usually tend to be more relevant/tailored to that siteMachismo likes this. -

Sponsored messages with some shitcoin grifts in basically every large channel. Don't know if it's still a thing, but I'm used to patching them out (sed -i 's|history\->peer\->isChannel()|false|' tdesktop-$pkgver-full/Telegram/SourceFiles/data/data_sponsored_messages.cpp).

On fedi i'd totally be down to enable a header banner for non logged in users. Although my instance isnt really super used these days
I was not aware telegram did ads though, so I shall take a looksie. Thanks!
As for influence type marketing, idk how I feel about that, unless they use the site and are really relevant it'd be a tough one -

Telegram itself is not doing ads, but channel operators offering ad services is very widespread. There are even analytics sites specifically made to accommodate this type of usage.

I've never used IG once and I really hate marketing altogether. But it will happen, no matter the political affiliation. Best influencer marketing is done covertly anyway. Look at how easy it was for NJP to grift people on the right. -

If you are talking about ads bringing people to your instance, I'd probably try telegram.
Ads and the platform you're gonna put them on are directly related to the people you want to attract.
There are differences even between gay fedi and dark fedi. People around these parts wouldn't tolerate banner ads and would probably change instance/client. On the other hand you could just add the ad to your profile and/or pay popular account to add it to their profiles. I'd think influencer type marketing would work. -

Yeah thats fair, and also the ideal for sure.
I think self-serve banners are quite cute. I've used 4chan ones and got most of my users that way. They arent very in the way I like seeing them personally (as well as being a good way to give money to a site and getting something out of it)
I'm always looking for sites to whack some money at for a little banner image (ofc I prefer to use/have used said site)
For the forum, I've seen others post about the site on other sites (which is quite a nice feeling),
I think in the cold analytical view until a site gets the ball rolling hard for word of mouth to work.
I do like the webring approach and that sort of thing a lot of these newer old school sites do, so I've tried to lean towards that. I think my forum is a bit too 'modern' for many of their tastes I would imagine
its an interesting element I think about (wanting the site to be alive and all that ofc) -

Anything other than organic word of mouth would feel off
