Until the 1970s, health cards in Japan were still kept in German. This is ensured by O-yatoi gaikokujin (contract foreigner) Erwin Otto Eduard von Bälz, #OTD *1849, who, as Agathon Wernich's successor, taught Western medicine in Tokyo for 29 years.
