WRT the plane, it's possible they had to fly around for an hour or so to burn fuel before landing because they weighed too much. -

I think generally it would be preferred they burn the fuel over dumping it as long as they weren't dealing with a failing engine or something more major. Who knows though -

As long as they don't need the pressure and everyone stays seated it poses no real risk other than wasting fuel.
