     Apache HTTP Server.

     It serves 1/3 of the worlds traffic, is a bellwether for the industry and has been for decades. The modern web doesnt exist without Apache.

     @nixCraft I'd say magazines. I wouldn't have known about linux, or the web without them. I became curious about them and looked them up.

     Magazines are completely open source and fit the description.
