Quote: "What struck me was not just that [2023] was record-breaking, but the amount by which it broke previous records," notes Andrew Dessler, a professor of atmospheric science at Texas A&M University. The margin of some of these records - which you can see on the chart below - is "really astonishing", Prof Dessler says, considering they are averages across the whole world. The chart shows daily global average air temperatures plotted between 1940 to 2023, and highlights an increasingly large gap in red between the average and 2023, which is a MUCH greater significant margin of temperatures change than shown in any prior year -- as if the climate has uncoupled itself from the prior trends and patterns.
