     Proton is a patched version of Wine to run games. It can do all other stuff that wine does.

     @nixCraft No joke, one day I ran a Windows app (Notepad++ if I remember correctly) though Wine in a Linux VM with the $DISPLAY pointing to a X server on the host Windows.

     In other words, I ran a Windows app in the most over the top way I could think of.

     @nixCraft Running stuff as a non-Steam game is how I usually try software first, and it more often than not works perfectly.

     As someone who hates having to use a command line or go through weird installations (I have no idea what a Bottle is), the ease of use always wins

     @nixCraft We need more eyes on why Lutris removed Proton compatibility in favor of vanilla Wine. I still see games that run fine under Proton fail to run even through Wine with custom configuration like PlayOnLinux.

     The rumor was the reason for the Lutris removal was because Proton doesn't work as well outside of Steam.

     If that's the case, then that is a massive problem and needs to be fixed within Proton. We can NOT become beholden to the proprietary Steam client to use open-source Proton.
