Nobody's soyfacing over ChatGTP anymore, but I still hear boomers whispering about how AI is gonna steal everyone's jobs.
So has AI on its current form proven itself to be more of a gimmick with some useful administrative applications? Or is this perceived plateau of progress a result of them lobotomising the model so badly to prevent it being racist that is essentially useless now?

it's a gimmick, mostly
competent users can use it to speed up some of the rote wordcel tasks that are unavoidable in any job (writing descriptions of things, documentation, boilerplate code)
the issue is that because it produces "plausible" words/code/etc, incompetents (indians) can flood work channels with even more chaff, and it is now harder for management to filter them out
for an example of this playing out in real time, look at the security industry, which is an intersection of technical work and the "publish or perish" mindset
