Why (Bloomed & Unhanced)There are plenty of animes that can gauge someones capacity for bullshit, but whats the point? More bullshit? Even the most pretentious animes dont have nearly as much bullshit as Ingmar Bergman films. If you're interested in artistic expression in visual media, anime sits leagues below things captured in live action. If you're interested in animation as a craft, traditional animation from Japan dried up in ~2010 along with the rest of the world. The most interesting new animated works are going to be independent and western. Japan isn't great about independently funded art.
@why A couple of years ago, there were a few videos popular on Youtube about how pro wrestling is not in-fact dumb and stupid and how it's worth paying attention to. It did open me to the idea that maybe this thing that I had always dismissed as borderline retarded had something interesting at its core, and thinking about it I realize intellectually that yeah, pro wrestling is probably actually pretty cool and comfy to watch. But despite having an open mind about it, knowing fully that it's probably pretty cool, whenever I actually see pro wrestling on TV, I just cannot see past the oiled up shirtless dudes fake hitting one another, to see what wrestling fans actually see behind it. I understand it's someone's comfort entertainment, and that it's not inherently worse than my comfort entertainment, but at this point it's probably too late and it will never be watchable to me.
Anime is essentially the same, I watched a shitton of it in my teens and early adulthood and yeah, I can see past the anime bullshit. And whenever I kept bugging my open-minded friends to watch some anime that I thought was a masterpiece they probably thought the same as I now think of wrestling: "I understand there's something to like here, but man I just can't take it seriously with the giant eyes and gratuitous sexualization". So anyway, once past your teens the "window" to learn to take anime seriously is probably closed and people should just accept it on both ends of it.
@why lots of new anime has good animation, but it's heavily propped up by CG. and it took a long-ass time to start getting anime CG that didn't look like shit.
@noyoushutthefuckupdad@why As I've said on the podcast, there's no use lamenting traditional animation anymore, because the new format has been mastered
@guizzy coming from me, I watched a lot of animes and liked doing so. I'd still love to see something that's actually good, but every time I try I feel like I'm wasting time. Would love it if there was a nip equivalent of Don Hertzfeldt but they either don't exist or already existed (nekojiru) or I haven't been told about it because ALL I FUCKING SEE IS CHAINSAW MAN AND CYBERSLOP AND BOCCHI
@why@guizzy there is a pretty good old anime about monsters disguised as humans living in human society, and a corporations starts hunting them to put their body parts into a drug that accidentally ends up turning people into monsters. the story was unique and the art style was "artistic" kinda only barely anime looking, but google sucks now so i can't find it to tell you the name
@coolboymew@noyoushutthefuckupdad the method + technology of 3d animation can be as interesting as traditional (or other hand method) animation. It's a craft like any other, and a lot of older anime fans still hold a grudge. But animation tech is not my interest, and if it was I would have seen Avatar 2 a hundred times and still be laughing at anime
also, god damn anime blogs are a wasteland. this is exactly like video games. they want to be culture critics but they don't know anything older than ten years
@Moon@guizzy@why And even there, as seen by the extreme poor state of CR awards and co, the "personalities" voting on them probably only watch like 5 anime per season
@coolboymew@noyoushutthefuckupdad I haven't seen it, but I would hazard a guess that 75% of the frames have no photography or anything real. practical effects are best used when the characters, locations, etc are on real film
@coolboymew@noyoushutthefuckupdad we're talking about art here there's no "wouldn't work". anime is an artstyle that can be applied to anything, you have committed to using 3dcg tech to make a show, and you use it to copy what was done with cels? Also tell me with a straight face that the best of ghibli, oshii, gainax, and most other things listed ITT don't have significant environment porn
@coolboymew@noyoushutthefuckupdad Ah yes, the extremely 2D environment of Angel's Egg, which could not have been elaborately sculpted in 3D as it had been on cels
@why How about waiting for like 5 years until it finally recovers? And around 2010? Nigger, there are computerized TV Anime that look foot drawn from around 2005. Even Mazinger Z looked better than some of the dick cheese Anime Studios dared to crap out as a Cour.
