   @anders Thanks for driving home the point that who owns and controls the algorithms is the key thing. It’s not understood or stated nearly enough.

   Coincidentally, since I have my own instance, the explore tab and the trending links in there are basically the popularity algorithm you describe for me as they’re based only on the people I follow and their federated reach. I do find it very useful and usually end up scrolling through that first.

     Moving my public social media presence from Twitter to Mastodon has also had me revisit some thoughts around recommendation algorithms.
