@mja@jihadjimmy@cho whatsapp, until shortly after I noticed it, had in their description on the jewgle play store that it uses fone numbers in order to avoid "hard to remember usernames". Fone numbers, of course, being the original hard to remember usernames. Maybe the hypocrisy finally hit them?
@jihadjimmy@cho also whatsapp is not better, they literally keep the keys backedup on their server, they are in that way a third party to all your conversations. see also, though keep in mind this only is "legal access", they access a lot of shit illegally https://propertyofthepeople.org/document-detail/?doc-id=21114562
@jihadjimmy@cho mtproto, the protocol used for e2ee is public and open, aswell as telegram itself is open source, and unlike most implementations of shit like omemo on xmpp and the matrix protocol, it actually goes under professional security review both of protocol and implementation
Telegram is even worse than Whatsapp for privacy, the encryption scheme is proprietary and behind doors and they can decrypt anything they want on demand, "secret chat" is a load of bullshit, a honeypot to bait pedos that have retarded opsec like you.
@cho depends. generally they dont glow as hard and have some stuff like splitting data across jurisdictions, but also you have to explicitly open a secret chat for e2ee, which is displayed seperately and makes very clear the drawbacks such as only being one device to another, rather than some like most xmpp clients or matrix or even signal to a more limited extent that just lie and hide the extra device shit that could worsens security drastically
@Zerglingman@cho@jihadjimmy common issue tbh. i mean i understand why they do it but i wish usernames were an option. same shit with signal like idk i could use some cheap sms code service for a pseudonym but id rather just be able to use a username, even if it atill needed phone verif
@mja@jihadjimmy@cho I just find the whole concept of fone-centric design to be disgusting, and I will gladly have nothing to do with anything that does it, nor with anyone that binds themselves to it.
@Zerglingman@cho@jihadjimmy yeah the ideal in my mind is to have a choice of phone or username, and potentially still linking that if wanted for discoverability, but still allow, yknow, do the single device app focused shit wtv but still allow for desktop etc users, even kf your still mandating one device only
