@SuperSnekFriend kinda but let’s not act like it’s just as easy. Linux nerd forget how inscrutable the command line is for normies
@Paultron @SuperSnekFriend Yeah yeah, it’s nice and all but linux is the only thing that constantly, never-endingly breaks my allotted “fucking around with computer nonsense” hours. Something’s always requiring some nig-job to do otherwise boring, commonplace stuff that’s second nature to other computers and it’s irritating.
I don’t like equipment that steals my time like that. I’m not the kind of guy who likes wasting a weekend in the garage babying his ducati, and I’m certainly not the guy who gets off on code
The whole “by autists, FOR autists part is cool though. But I’m only using it because the alternatives have shotgun-blasted their asscheeks off themselves so I’m not the target market
@teknomunk @Paultron @SuperSnekFriend That’s what I dislike. I don’t enjoy it. I talk to nerds of all these diff. stripes who almost look forward to shit breaking because it means they spend fun time in the garage again
I’m not that patient. I don’t want to waste more than 1 hr per month on getting a computer to do what it’s capable of doing. Any more than that and I’m pissed with it. Since introducing linux to my life, it’s just never stopped and I don’t know how anyone has the patience for it (unless they can monetize it)
@pete_pint @teknomunk @Paultron @SuperSnekFriend Probably depends a lot on the driver. Things are much better as a whole but there’s simply too much variation between systems for them to cover everything. I’m hoping that once I get a distro I really like I’ll have it squared away for 10+ years of use but that’s likely optimistic.
It’s just little things, like the wifi card/antenna just disappearing from the system entirely after a reboot. IPV6 leaks, hotkeys rolling back from my preferences every time I close a program….
@WashedOutGundamPilot @teknomunk @Paultron @SuperSnekFriend I find that with Linux, it depends on what you’re trying to do. If it’s a simple email server, once set up it’s pretty easy to forget about it and it will just run forever. A desktop where you’re running a bunch of different apps can be more work. I had some issues with my Arch install when support for my GPU was dropped (it’s old as fuck) but I found a solution in the wiki, which is pretty good. Took me several hours to work through though. But that was a year ago and haven’t had trouble since. I do have to be careful about running updates though, so as not to brick my system.
I just can’t stand pajeet-soft winders anymore, so I just deal with the linux hassles.
@john_rando @teknomunk @Paultron @SuperSnekFriend I suspect linux guys are either immersed in tech shit all the time or they’ve been in the cozy-zone for so long they forget about the pain of breaking in a new pair of boots like that.
People shit on apple for their faggotry but they at least have a good eye for ergonomics. Their trackpad support is STILL uncontested, I can’t figure out why msoft doesn’t just rip off their whole suite of gestures by now.
Then again it’s all use case. I like trackpads because they’re easier to use in places that aren’t the office - in the garage, in bed, in the car, etc. That’s a weird fringet case for most people
