In case you’re thinking of getting a @PINE64 PineBook Pro, just know that HDMI out doesn’t work on it and there doesn’t seem to be any work on getting it to do so.

@Ateriath Yeah, it feels like @Pine64 has abandoned it and that doesn’t give me any confidence in any of their future products.
They should be stepping in and ensuring this is fixed and upstreamed to latest Linux kernels. Or stop selling the PineBook Pro if they’re not going to support it properly. If a basic feature is not working on a three-year-old computer, something is very wrong.

@aral I know… I hate how development on this still very capable machine has ground to a halt, and will likely never be upstreamed. I think if you use Manjaro you can load a custom kernel to get Alt DP out working, but it’s based on Kernel 5.7. Not even positive that works anymore.

Using a beamer over HDMI on a #pinephone running #Mobian worked rarely for me in Sep 2021; now it works most of the time with only minor annoyances.
Mobian and the other distributions aim at supporting more than just one choice of phone hardware:

@boud HDMI our works on my PostmarketOS edition Pinephone. But not on the PineBook Pro. Not sure if it’s just because the Pinephone OSes all use older kernels or if it’s because of a difference in hardware. But definitely broken on the PineBook Pro.

That's an interesting interpretation of the situation. It's not supported by Manjaro's default kernel, but there's a link to a custom kernel fork in that discussion where it is.
Pretty sure the maintainers of that fork wouldn't appreciate the claim that no work is being done to get the feature working.

@triantares If I remember correctly from what I was reading yesterday that was the last kernel it worked on, apart from an outdated third-party hacked kernel that’s being put forth as the “solution” at the moment.

@aral @PINE64 @pine64eu Ah, there's the difference: Mine still ran on 5.7 when I gave it away.
I managed to port Enlightenment E16 to it and lost interest after that and gave the machine away. I'll warn the current owner not to upgrade the kernel.

Thankfully, HDMI out works on every other Linux laptop I own so I’m not reduced to that option. Just would have been nice to demonstrate how the PinebookPro could have been used for tech/web education at this event I’m taking part in next week. (And it could be amazing if there was a bit of effort from @PINE64 itself in filing away the few remaining rough edges.)

“I've also modified the DT of Pinebook Pro to use the same approach to Type-C support as Pinephone Pro. One major issue with Pinebook Pro is that it can't limit input current based on what software wants. It consumes 12.5 W from Type-C port if it can (as long as voltage doesn't drop bellow 4.5V). This makes proper implentation of power delivery impossible. It's risky to connect PBP to regular USB-A ports on the computer due to this.”
