     @nixCraft bash and IIRC most other shells have Ctrl-R for command history search. I am always baffled by hearing people do not know this.

     @nixCraft I have set up my zsh so that a sub string (without any key prefix pressed) is sufficient and with cursor up/down only the hits remain in the history.

     I did this to find a "history | grep" I did a few weeks ago, there's always more history to go through than you think.

     an interesting tidbit about the "history" command.
     for some reason if you start a cli command with a space, history won't record it. pretty sneaky!
