The true problem with the "choice in video games" trope, is that is it nearly impossible to fulfill on a technical level. It will always lead to disappointment because to have a true branching story you would have to make multiple games worth of content to go into one game.
This was quasi-achievable 20 - 30 years ago, when game loops were much simpler and had much simpler hardware complexity / demands on graphical fidelity. Even then the closest you could get was "different characters have different stories but they take place in the same areas using the same assets"
