     He sure as hell doesn't fight against it. He wants to be seen as nice and progressive and inclusive without openly scrapping Church teaching. The good news is that "progressive" clergy is almost exclusively a Boomer phenomenon, and the Church will get through this.

The more people think the Church is already OK with faggot couples, the more pleased he is.

     Young progressives by and large don't bother LARPing when they can just have Pride parades on Sundays instead. Boomer progressives LARP in various churches because church was "normal" growing up.

     That's not really how the priesthood works. There's criticism of modernism but you're not supposed to openly pick fights with your superiors.
