@coolboymew premise and stages remind me of Earthworm Jim 3D, being set in dream and consequentially having somewhat wacky environments.
The gameplay is a bit N64 joystick centric, using primarily A, B and Z (A, X, LT on modern (xbox/deck) scheme) respectively, but modern layout works well as well, right stick et al, it just feels awkward at times like when you're in "aiming mode" you use left stick to aim instead of right. Game even has special options for playing on real N64 controller, too. No keyboard controls and no rebinds for joystick either tho.
The moveset feels very nice, although i'm constantly having a skill issue since game sort of requires you to hold jump button longer to make higher jumps. It is a bit unorthodox since you do not exactly have a double jump, your only way of double jumping is being near a wall, but you can also extend length of jump with a "dash" (headbutt), there are walljumps ninja gaiden style but you generally can only do it once, you can wallslide however.
The animations are great and fluid, walking even has 3 distinct animations - running, walking and tiptoeing, everything that isn't static geometry feels a bit like it's made of jello to an extend - bouncy, again reminds me of earthworm jim a bit.
Music so far is really good, it feels like amiga tracker music, like the game itself feels like amiga fan making a n64 game.
writing is great, even the tutorial level has great writing, despite characters referencing control buttons and stuff it feels very in-universe, i.e. all tips are literal sticky notes, author of which might not have perfect grammar or completely sure of mechanics or state of MC's powers at the moment, and MC sometimes reacts to those tidbits. Oh and also at least MC's character is quite expressive visually.
I like it so far, it's not a hat in time but it's good. Biggest downer is that I can't find any art of it on e621 (yet?)
Regards, not a platformer fan, never had an n64, and have no nostalgia for those kinds of games in general.
