@John I think that there is a lot of social pressure on people to use iPhones just to get rid of the green bubbles, and that pressure seems strong. Apple supporting RCS and allowing e2e on other platforms should reduce that, but we'll see.
Also, I think that the inability to change the default messenger on apple devices is a problem that feeds into this as well. (I've had problems in the family with this)

That surprises me. I thought that Apple fans were the only ones paying attention or caring about this story (and that the actual market for such a thing among Android users was near zero).
I prefer open standards, and I would simply avoid messaging systems that are not open and (as much as possible) platform independent.
iMessage is what it is, and not open.
