Nice… dog gets through the fence (again) and while I’m there to get him, next door neighbour lets slip that our landlord is apparently looking to sell the place.
“Oh, he didn’t mention it to us.”
“He’s looking privately.”
“That’s nice.”
Fucking landlords and this whole fucking system, really.
Lost count how many times we’ve had to move in the past few years alone. Just when you’re getting productive, some dickhead decides he wants to sell or move in himself (what happened last time).

@Erik Way more than we have. For some reason it seems that working for the common good for almost the past decade isn’t entirely compatible with being able to afford a house in Ireland :)

@ShaneB Not in Ireland. You have very few rights. At most, they just have to give you as much notice as is legally required. Since we’ve been here for over a year now, that’s six months notice for us.

@aral Today marks 8 years since I moved in this house. I feel trapped in that we had to buy ($2000+ rent at the time vs $1300 mortgage and we could get the loan) but, watching everywhere, damn I'm glad we're not dealing with selling landlords anymore. 2 of our last 3 rentals, in both Hawaii and Texas, were sold out from under us and... what a pain. Add the skyrocketing prices and I wish y'all luck.

@geewiz Thanks, Jochen. Y’know, here’s what’s going to happen: Some folks are going to say “enough is enough” and they’re going to burn it to the ground. And I can’t really say I’m going to feel inclined to lift a finger to stop them. Would ideally not see that happen (and heck, trying to work to improve things so it doesn’t) but I completely understand why it might. And I can’t blame them given how precariously we’re living and we’re no where near the worst off under this bullshit system.

I also just looked it up and it seems they passed a law to ban evictions between Jan-Mar because it’s so hard to find a place here. So we’re likely looking at September soonest if (a) he actually is looking to sell (just wrote to him to ask) and (b) if he finds someone.

@aral ah sorry, didn’t realize (so probably should have shut up!). Six months is something… you’d get one after lease expires in America. Sorry for the hassle.

@aral landlord moving into the place you're renting is the worst. We moved across the country, were very specific about finding a landlord who wanted long-term tenants, and within 7 months of signing the lease we got an email telling us to find a new place to live bc he's gonna move in. It kills your savings/money plans to have to move so often and it's beyond frustrating when you have to move for reasons you 100% cannot control.

Right, wrote to the landlord, apparently he spoke to the neighbour “a few years ago” about “possibly” selling it back then. Has no plans to do so now.

The damn precariousness of it all is the worst bit.
