gah. I've said this before, but I /hate/ intermediate waits. if something happens in like 0-4 seconds, that's great. I can just focus on it. if something takes an hour to run, that's fine too, because I can do other stuff in the background.
but things that take like 20 seconds to 2 minutes are the worst, because they're just long enough for me to task-switch away, but not so long that it makes sense to have a notification system to tell me when they're done

the end result is that a 2 minute wait can end up taking longer than a 30 minute wait would, because I switch away and tend to forget to go back

@mei sadly this is a website thing, and it's a javascript abomination so there's no way to alert me when it's done, other than to keep checking the tab

@foone I can very much relate, but… actually, what do you mean by “it doesn’t make sense to have a notification system for them”? it clearly would be actually useful.
some terminals fire up a notification whenever a command finishes while the terminal isn’t in focus, i bet that could help with some of the cases
headmate’s boyfriend mentions having an alias alert="some notify-send bullshit", which would also solve some aspects of this, though you have to have the foresight to append ; alert ahead of time
though, if you’re not being paid to do what you’re doing? maybe getting distracted and coming back to it whenever is the more comfy solution
