@Wormwood :thinking: How much shrimp does it take for them to lose money?

@ceo_of_monoeye_dating @Wormwood aquafeed.com/newsroom/news/cpf-builds-shrimp-50-farm-in-the-usa/
CP is the largest shrimp farm on the planet, they project 15$/2.2 pounds cost for one of their most expensive sites.
I do not believe red lobster actually sources from american shrimp farms. Buyers of those are usually expecting fresh or live shrimp. cost per pound if they are using frozen shrimp is closer to 10 cents usd, especially if the franchise is buying several hundred tonnes.
this loss is probably not from eating too much shrimp but the price strategy. Every table eating shrimp is not selling things with extreme markup to cover manpower, power and rental.

@Wormwood Shrimp - if you cook it at home - is like $8/lb. You have to eat 2.5 pounds of shrimp for them to take a loss if you are only counting the shrimp themselves. That's...only 1200 calories of shrimp. Most people on fedi should be able to pack away that much shrimp. If you resolve to eat 2000 calories of shrimp and nothing else, you've taken a jackhammer to their financials.
Moreover, the red lobster shrimp is flavored and cooked and served to you. It's gotta be more than the per-pound price for shrimp.
Bro we should all be doing this. LETS BANTS

@ceo_of_monoeye_dating @Wormwood imagine one retard going to red lobster sits his ass down for 3hours on 20 dollars.
pandaexpress on the other side of the road is rotating 3 covers at 30 dollars per.
macdonalds drive through is going over 50 orders at 20 dollars per.
skill issue

between chemical baths, glazing it in ice, there are margins to be had. especially if the farms are third world enough. Look at what goes into shrimp feed. Fish bones, pigs blood, chicken feathers.
you can easily find frozen shrimp locked behind a 20 ton moq priced at around 1-2 dollars a kilogram online. long term contract? price goes down. willing to issue LC for a future delivery in 3 months? price does down.
mmm tasty

@IAMAL_PHARIUS @Wormwood Where the fuck do you get shrimp for 10 cents per pound?
Even if I look for wholesale shrimp the best I can find is $5.70 per pound (which does change the math above, but not enough to change the upshot.) I can imagine this getting cut down to $4 or so per pound for a bulk customer like Red Lobster...but 10 cents per pound is unimaginable. That's "hunger ended in the US" costs, churches would be clamoring for the stuff.

the cost was never the issue (at least as long as I've been alive)
but agreed about the cost. less than $1/lb would surprise me (and I expect it's quite a bit more than that)
