The box art, story in the manual and back of the box marketing had to be the draw. It did a lot of lifting in retrospect. Still appreciate what programmers squeezed out of that antique hardware and shaped a big chunk of my childhood.

Well, I can't speak for as far back as the Atari 2600 with its admittedly quite weak graphics, but for the NES era on up, stuff like the epic box art they did for some games could really fuel the imagination and actually help you get into the game that much more. At least for a kid. Doesn't work as well for many of us as an adult sadly. 😞
