Having played the Steam release for a little while now, I find myself actually pretty disappointed with Dwarf Fortress. It feels like no real progress has been made in the almost-decade it took to get the Steam version out (2014-2022/23). Back then, DF was the only real "colony sim" on the market, but now it feels like it's been left behind by everything else out there. It just feels so much more clunky and unpleasant than I remember, and it definitely feels like the bugs are worse. QoL has taken a hit as well, for every improvement the new UI made it got rid of some essential feature. And to top it all off, modding is now considerably harder because you can't adjust raws in ongoing saves anymore, because it all dumps into some encoded binary format instead of raw text files like it used to. So if a reaction is screwed up, there's no going and quickly editing it, you've just got to abandon that save entirely and start from scratch! :kek_pain:
Really feels like all the dev-time went to making niggerfaggot dwarves and other assorted tranny-bait garbage rather than actually fixing any of the long-standing bugs, or even just adding interesting new features like people hoped would happen. Hell, the whole reason they dropped adventure mode was so they could create a cutesy little dynamic portrait system! You know, a feature that will not only fail to actually add meaningful content, but will actively hurt modders, who will now be expected to create a whole palette of stupid portraits for any new content they add!! :hoshino_weary:
Maybe there's a patch right around the corner that'll fix this, maybe the adventure mode update will solve all my gripes and I'll be left looking like a stupid asshole, but given the levels of delusional "IT'S A FEATURE!!!!!! :soy_cry: " I'm seeing in the forums, both Steam and otherwise, I'm not holding my breath on anything of worth changing anytime soon. :yuudachi_tired:
Sad thing is, I'll probably still keep trying to play it, cause I remember it being so good back in the day. Maybe I'll just install an older version and try to be happy with that. :lain_sad:
(Momijis to compensate for wall of text :awoo_awoo: )

@wan
I mean, I didn't pay for it, and I was hoping that it would actually represent an improvement for how long it took to come out. Joke's on me for thinking good things are allowed to happen anymore. :kek_pain:

@Giganova8 Why would you choose to play the Steam release?
