Ate a persimmon the other day. First time off of our own tree, and I've only ever had one or two before that. Preddy gud. There are a bunch still on the tree which I will probably need to pull down now that we've had a good freeze. It's hard to leave them up when it's so cold, but everything I read says they just take this long and the longer you wait the better they get.
The one I pulled off the tree last week was still pretty firm, but it was nice and sweet. I'm not really sure how I'd describe the flavor. It's funny because my daughter-in-law said it taste like cantelope but I thought it was much closer to something like mango. Both of us I think were using the visual sense to help describe the taste. The color is like a melon or mango, but the texture is different from both. I would say it might be a little closer in texture to the mango but less fibrous. It's definitely sweeter than cantelope or musk fruit, but not quite as sweet as a really ripe mango.
Anyway I like them and I'm glad I have so many this year.
