You may have seen how volcano eruptions are depicted in cartoons, with red-hot lava shooting straight up in the sky before cascading down the slopes of the mountain. It’s called volcanic fountaining, and it does occur in real life, as the 2021 eruption of Fagradalsfjall in Iceland displayed.
