@RealRaul Also, Hangul is really fucking complex and confusing, it has no ties to any other languages in the area, I'm not surprised the literacy is so fucking low. It's probably high among natives, but among foreign workers I wouldn't be surprised if it's less than 10%
@RealRaul I really wonder what metric they use for literacy. Do you need to know every fucking word? Or is it just being able to read in general? Cuz there are countries that you'd expect to have a much higher rate, even before migrants started flooding their borders, that are really fucking low.
@RealRaul@NathanielHigger1488 While I was being driven around by a host family in Hokkaido, I found a sand box that had hira on it instead of the usual mix, and realised I'd been pronouncing one of the characters incorrectly, so I mentioned it, and the mum was surprised that I could even read kanji at all, and when I said I could maybe pronounce 50-100, she said I probably knew more than most of her family.
