   One day I'll overcome the nuisance of trying to get SSH working on a nested virtual machine on a network I don't have administrator privileges on.

     True. I could just run a virtual machine over QEMU and connect via localhost to avoid having to deal with that for learning the ropes at the very least but I've decided to be difficult about it.
