Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 20:03:23 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @niclas I tried to get down on top of everything and listen really intently, but my ears just aren't good enough to discern which item is making noise. It seems like it may not be the PSU but may be the esp itself, the LEDs or some wire or terminal block in between. I'm not really sure. I was thinking maybe it could be the pwm from the data line. -
Niclas Hedhman (niclas@angrytoday.com)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 20:03:25 JST Niclas Hedhman Could be either or both.
I have tinnitus nowadays and I think it was caused by a PSU screaming too loud, or covid coinciding with a misbehaving psu.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 21:01:24 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @niclas ok so I think it's the PSU, but I think my wiring was amplifying the problem. I found a loose ground that was looping around the data line. I spread everything out and tightened up the weak ground and now I can only hear it if I put my ear up to the PSU. Same frequency so I think that's it but much quieter. -
Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 21:10:17 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @niclas I managed to find an esp module I used when I built my lamp during the development phase which I was hoping would save me some time because I'm currently using a raspberry pi for my may desktop while I wait for a new framework so I don't have all the tools installed to work with microcontrollers. Anyway, turns out there seems to be some kind of bug in this version of wled where when it loses power the settings are saved correctly but not applied. Each time I disconnect the power supply and plug it back in the first 30 leds light up which is the default. I go into settings and it knows there are 102, but I have to edit the settings to a number below 30 and then back to 102 for it to actually light all of the leds. To be fair this build is from something like december 2021 so it's a bit out of date, but I was hoping to avoid having to mess with the software side until later. Now that I think about it though I may be able to use the OTA update feature to install a new build of the latest code. The only thing I really changed on my build was stripping out amazon related code. -
white_male (white_male@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 21:10:30 JST white_male @thatguyoverthere @niclas Poor quality transformers in any PSU, not gunked up well enough to prevent coil vibrations that result in audible coil whine. These issues don't go away. Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

Once the psu is installed I don't think what you can hear now will be noticeable from outside of the lamp. -
Santa Noodle ☦️ (bowsacnoodle@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 21:15:15 JST Santa Noodle ☦️ @thatguyoverthere @niclas That's very annoying. I still have my upper limit of hearing like the *adults can't hear this ring tone* range and it's annoying hearing things like this from cheap electronics. I hear a weird beeping pulse in one of the rooms of my house that my wife can't hear. I'm probably going to get my mechanic's stethoscope and try to pinpoint it, but I'm afraid it's from an electric line. Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

My hearing isn't great. Once upon a time I spent a lot of time around jet engines and really loud music (not often together), but I think I perceive things that are just at my threshold better than some other people around me. Not sure if that's hearing or just my squirrel like attention span. -
white_male (white_male@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 21:18:23 JST white_male @thatguyoverthere @niclas That's still noise pollution and ear strain, all depends how sensitive you are to it, how long will you be around it and a small risk of developing hearing problems.
I'm sensitive to that so it would piss me off to no end, developed sensitivity too.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -
Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 21:18:23 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @white_male @niclas My hearing already isn't fantastic.
Right now I am much closer to the PSU than I will normally be once it's in place and I can't hear it. I have to put my ear up to the device, and this is at full power for one strand of LEDs. Maybe it becomes more perceptible when I wire in the next 2 strands, but if not I think it'll be fine. I don't expect I will run these at full power very often, and where the lamp is going to be situated is much further away than I am from the PSU right now. -
Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 21:22:20 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @niclas This bug would have gone completely unnoticed on the led project it was used in because the number of leds used in that project was less than the default so all of my leds worked even after power interuptions. -
white_male (white_male@poa.st)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 21:22:25 JST white_male @thatguyoverthere @niclas Yeah, more load will most likely make it worse, higher Lorentz forces or something. Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this. -

I will be installing the leds in the book case before I build the lamp which will house the PSU so for some time the electronics will probably be sitting on top waiting for a body like Kraang. -

Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: (thatguyoverthere@shitposter.club)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 23:45:37 JST Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: @niclas these are sk2812 (also individually addressable, but including a white channel). I haven't seen any unexpected failures except for this issue of reverting to defaults on power failure. If it weren't for the fact that it still lists the correct led count in the settings I would suspect some kind of hardware issue. I suspect an update to wled will correct the issue. -
Niclas Hedhman (niclas@angrytoday.com)'s status on Saturday, 18-Nov-2023 23:45:39 JST Niclas Hedhman Are these WS2812B LEDs?
The timing of those have changed over time. And IIRC, the old LEDs were so much close to the limit that sometimes they would fail, no matter how the timing was adjusted.
The new timing introduced a much wider allowed time for one of the bit states, that those kind of problems disappear, but the old code is still hovering close to the lower time limit. With newer LEDs, new code should be used and problem is gone.Disinformation Purveyor :verified_think: likes this.
