@coolboymew Valve has made a big mistake in not offering trade-in for the old models. Gamers are going to be upgrading to this new model in droves and there is nowhere for those old models to go except the used market. No one wants the Gen 1 model because the oled is so nice, so prices are going to be WILD in the coming weeks. I probably could have got one for less if I waited, but I'm inpatient
@ocean I don't think Valve really wants to handle a used market for these and I really don't think they care about price bottoming out either. They want to have the Deck OS installed on other stuff too in the future, so. They're not here to sell hardware at all cost, they're there to keep a stronghold on the market and keeping microsoft at bay and thank god for that
@coolboymew@ocean >They want to have the Deck OS installed on other stuff too
i don't think that's specifically the case, as there hasn't been public general-purpose SteamOS 3.x images or anything like that. They do want to have steam running on other devices as well as to have this form-factor of devices in general.
If anything, vast majority of important stuff is in Steam itself, not much for OS, like if you use chimeraos or holo-iso, or just their components to run steam as a separate "desktop session" on normal PC it would still reference Deck and act as if it's running on one.
@coolboymew@ocean was it recently or during original SteamOS release aka "Steam Machines" that everyone keep saying that are dead despite being quite popular in DIY scene?
@coolboymew i bet the oled upgrade screens will be selling on aliexpress for like $150 very soon for the v1 steam deck. its probably already available in shenzhen. valve would take an off the shelf component to keep costs down. from what i see it seems the oled display will be from samsung. its a 7" 16:10 90Hz 600nits 1280x800 OLED. i'm looking forward to the increased battery life and contrast. lots of mods incoming i bet. sammobile.com/news/steam-deck-oled-90hz-samsung-panel/#
@moomin not too surprise as they also team up with ifixit for guides and pieces. So if it's a completely available component, it's easier for everyone
There's a new APU too, smaller and take less battery, probably just like the updated switch, this + better battery makes it so that the battery life will be slightly better
@ocean@coolboymew Thanks for the reminder, I'll keep an eye on ebay to see when the locals get more desperate (the current lot are still trying to recoup 65%+ on units with visible screen marks, I'm more interested in 50% in nice condition)
