   All insurance is a scam, but #ccw insurance is the biggest scam of all. Just pay a retainer to a local attorney who you know will answer your call at 3AM.

   If people think dealing with home or auto insurance is bad, just wait until you’ve been unfortunately forced to discharge your firearm in self defense.

   Great business to be in, though. Write whatever bullshit policy you want. Add a “does not cover illegal or criminal acts” clause. Set up a “claim denied” auto-mailer and start printing.

     Insurance is a bet that something bad might happen.

     Gambling is a bet that something good might happen.

     I have never understood why one is a pillar of society and the other is a "disease".

     How much of insurance industry is rip-offs can be debated. In general, the mandatory insurances are probably a lot worse, since the option "don't want" isn't on the table and the providers know this.

     Nope. I have collected on others though. I should probably note I'm not in the US (EU), for whatever difference that makes.
     
     The only insurance I know here that did not pay out a freelancer of mine is income insurance when he got his COVID shot, but experimental medicine is explicitly excluded in the policy.

     Why is it by definition a scam if not mandated?
     My company handles infrastructure for large clients, if an employee of mine makes a mistake, the damages go up so high quickly that I can never cover them, so I insure those.

     I only take insurance when mandated or for risks I cannot reasonably cover
