Joy (joybrooks@mastodon.social)'s status on Monday, 13-Nov-2023 11:48:12 JST Joy @nixCraft I once had a user tell me their computer wasn't working. After a number of steps, asked them to check a couple of status lights downstairs. They said they couldn't. I asked why. Because the power was out.

Fair.
But last week I spent 3 hours on the line w/ IT to fix a bandwidth problem on my docking station. They charge the company some bunch of $$ per hour.
I trouble-shooted this w/ my kid before calling the support that is IT. It took my kid (no degree yet but proper live in the basement IT support) all of 1 minute to tell me it was the bandwidth of my docking station the problem.
My employer is out my time & IT's time, for what took my un-degreed kid 2 minutes to diagnose.Um.

Like calling me because the PC wasn't working, nothing appeared on the screen when they hit the Power button... Checking the cables, the monitor power cable was almost disconnected 🙄 And they told me they checked everything, the cables and stuff... Oh well!

And this is why things like cisco routers and switches don't have power buttons; they turn on as soon as you plug them in. Maybe a good idea for the server people to consider? -
Machismo (zerglingman@freespeechextremist.com)'s status on Monday, 13-Nov-2023 22:48:42 JST Machismo @teknomunk You will drive 2 hours to plug in a server that three separate people have assured you is plugged in. † top dog :pedomustdie: likes this. -

Zip-tie the cable into the server and the wall.
> drive two hours to find out someone cut the zip ties and pulled the cables out and three separate people lied about it
The universe has so far been winning at the game of "make something idiot-proof/create a stupider idiot". -

EvilSandmich (evilsandmich@poa.st)'s status on Monday, 13-Nov-2023 23:35:18 JST EvilSandmich @teknomunk @Zerglingman A lot of them already have velcro on the server psu (seen below) to secure the power to the server.
Servers, I don't think, are that big of a deal so far as remote support goes. Networking gear though, oof.Machismo likes this. -
PunishedD (punishedd@poa.st)'s status on Monday, 13-Nov-2023 23:43:46 JST PunishedD @Zerglingman @teknomunk Or worse. You will be assured that the server 3 time zones away is plugged in and turned on, and you will get multiple tickets to the network guys trying to troubleshoot it. 8 hours later you open a ticket on their manager, who finally yells at someone to walk over to the physical box and look at it, then they come back and say "oh there's black char marks all around the plug". 50/50 odds that it'll be plugged in after they replace the PSU a day later. -
Peter N Lewis (peternlewis@mastodon.social)'s status on Tuesday, 14-Nov-2023 10:23:40 JST Peter N Lewis @nixCraft @jrconlin yup. While doing tech support I had to resolve my centre’s Deputy Director’s computer not turning on — because **he** had unplugged it to plug his radio in.
