Why are thinkpads the most popular older model laptops? There are other older laptops with similar specs. Is it just the keyboard?
-
@MisterRogersSnapped I thought it was the open firmware.
-
@Zerglingman it isn't open unless you install open firmware though, there are proprietary bios blobs
-
@MisterRogersSnapped Right, yeah, that. As far as I know, you can't do that on anything else.
-
@Zerglingman just cause no one tries and no one tries cause the other old laptops don't have the userbase of thinkpads
Like if a million people still used a Toshiba Portege instead of an x210 or whatever they'd libreboot the Toshiba I would think
This might be applying shitty logic to a technical problem
-
@MisterRogersSnapped I'll believe that anyway, just because network effect is extremely gay but unfortunately very real.

@Zerglingman @MisterRogersSnapped
It's just democracy in another form.

@amerika @Zerglingman this is a hella interesting statement tbh

For kicks, consider PageRank at Google. Whatever sites already have an assload of traffic are ranked the most highly, so whatever is not popular gets excluded. Soon you have a perfect feedback loop for an echo chamber based on what the herd thinks it should think.

@MisterRogersSnapped @Zerglingman
Whatever the herd wants, it can enforce through network effects, so popularity dominates over reason. Same thing as having every idiot vote; whatever appeals to the lowest common denominator wins!
