   If you’re used to typing with a Macintosh keyboard layout and enjoy being able to enter typographical quotes anywhere using alt-[, alt-shift-] for “…” and and alt-shift-[ and alt-shift-] for ‘…’ and alt-; to enter a proper ellipsis (…), etc., download and install the us-mac.zip file from https://github.com/adunning/Mac-Keyboard-Layouts-for-Windows and then choose it from Settings > Time & Language > Language > Keyboard.

   (Because I’m testing on Windows at the moment and I don’t want to lose my sanity…)

     …And yet it’s still nowhere as expressive for me as using a Mac keyboard layout on Linux, where I also have the superpowers of my compose key, which I have mapped to Caps Lock (CL). Where, for example, I can do CL + dash + dash = en dash, CL + dash + dash + dash = em dash, CL + e + equal sign = €, CL + tm = ™, etc.

     Argh, Microsoft! Doesn't work in Windows 11. Apparently they've removed the keyboard section altogether and everything is lumped in under Settings > Time & language > Language & region > Preferred languages and they've likely changed the format or something.

     So the above works for Windows 10 but not 11 at the moment.

     Scratch that, they hid it really well in Windows 11. *sigh*

     So, after installing the Mac keyboard layout (I had to use the msi directly, setup.exe gave me an error) go to Settings > Time & language > Language & region > English (United States)
     > (… menu) > Language Options > Keyboards and make sure the Mac keyboard exists.

     You can move English (United States) to the top of the keyboards list and use the keyboard switcher in the task bar or Windows Key + spacebar to switch to it.

     @aral I use compose keys for that on Linux, where it's much easier to connect what you want with what to type: hit the compose-key (for me it's the right WIN key) followed by a dot (…), ^1 for ¹, (1) for ① (Ⓐ etc alike), typo quotes with ," „ or <"/>" “”, and so on. Need that on Win? Well, there's WinCompose, same key combos (plus a graphical lookup screen and a bunch of additions). Looup on Linux: /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose

     @aral which reminds me that I still need to make a custom keyboard layout for Windows again to more easily get access to æ, ø and å on a US layout now that I have a laptop again without a Nordic keyboard layout.
     And indeed, while I'm at it, I should add alt-gr shortcuts for commonly used symbols. I do like the idea of using caps lock as a compose key though.

     I just hope it still works on W11...

     @MaryPot I’m using Fedora Silverblue. I’m testing on multiple Linux distributions as well as Windows 10, 11, macOS Monterey and Ventura because folks are still using them so I’m forced to if I don’t want to leave them behind.

     We’re building bridges. By definition, one foot of a bridge will be where you are and the other where you want to be.

     You are using Windows ELEVEN??? 😮

     Scrub everything and install Windows 10 if you have to use Windows. 11 is FUBAR.
